Dia de los muertos in Oaxaca – video

Dia de los muertos (Day of the Dead) is a spectacular event in Mexico. We planned our road trip through Chiapas and Oaxaca in a way to arrive to Oaxaca for these days as it’s supposed to be best here.

Dia de los muertos is not Halloween. It’s a joyful event when people are awaiting their loved ones from the other side. They prepare altars at home with favourite things of their deceased family and friends (food, sweets, drinks, cigarettes…) and decorate graves with many flowers and candles. Then they sit by the grave, talk, eat and drink . 1st November is the day of deceased children and 2nd is devoted to adults. Around those days there are processions in towns when people have faces painted as Calavera Catrina and other creatures, they dance to crazy music and celebrate.

We think it’s absolutely unique and if you ever have a chance to come to Mexico, time it around Dia de los muertos. You won’t regret!
